JURIK

Jurik is a kind of fire-breathing dragon from the traditions of the people of Sunda, Indonesia. It is probably a type of cosmic serpent, recognized by the fiery trail it leaves across the heavens.

K

KADIMAKARA

A race of monsters in the traditions and beliefs of the people of Central Australia. At one time these creatures lived in the sky, then they fell to the Earth and lived there for a long time until the sun burned them up, leaving only their bones behind. The Aborigines call them Kadimakara, but people now refer to them as dinosaurs.

KA-EN-ANKH NERERU

The great cosmic snake described in the mythology of ancient Egypt. So vast is the body of this creature that it stretches from horizon to horizon across the arch of the night sky. In a daily enactment of the sun’s rising and setting, the god Ra reaches the horizon in his sun boat and enters the body of the serpent through its tail; in the morning, he emerges renewed from its mouth and begins his daily journey across the skies once more.

KAIA

In the beliefs of the people of the Gazelle peninsula of New Britain, Melanesia, the Kaia are spirits whose power was at one time much greater but who have been demoted to the status of demons. They make their home in the depths of the Earth, occasionally emerging from the mouths of volcanoes to bring terror and destruction to human beings. They most often take the form of snakes, eels or pigs, sometimes combining all three to form terrifying hybrid monsters.

KAKAMORA

A race of tiny spirits from the Solomon Isles in the Pacific Ocean. They dwell in caves and trees and are ruled over by a king and queen. Though generally well disposed towards humanity, they possess long sharp nails, which they will put to good use if necessary. They are afraid of the colour white and any article of this colour will drive them away.

KALEVANPOJAT

A tribe of demonic giants from the traditions and folklore of Finland. Their name means ‘sons of Kalevala or Kaleva’ and they are considered extremely dangerous. Kaleva was a primordial being and warrior. They hate all human beings and given the chance they like nothing better than to destroy fields of growing grain and turn areas of rich harvest into wasteland. They also like to destroy fine forests.

KALIYA

In the Hindu mythology of India, Kaliya is a bejewelled serpent with five heads that inhabits the deepest parts of the river Yamuna. This creature was the one-time king of the serpents, emerging at night from deep holes in the ground with his hordes of followers to lay waste to the surrounding countryside. When they had finished rampaging across the country, they would retire to a certain tree that grew beside a deep lake. One day the god Krishna climbed this tree in order to dive from its topmost branches into the water beneath. The burning light and heat of the deity caused a great wave of superheated water to consume the tree. This
